Letter: CBD oil has advantage over pharmaceuticals – Opinion – The Columbus Dispatch

Opioids are being consumed like candy in many parts of the United States. The high rate of prescriptions is shocking, given 1 in 4 people who take the pills for long-term treatment face issues with addiction. Recently, a nonaddictive compound has been gaining attention. Cannabidiol, otherwise known as CBD, is a nonpsychoactive extract of the hemp plant. Consumers who use the naturally derived oil report decreased pain, anxiety and depression. CBD presents a safer alternative to opioids for pain management.

Personally, I’ve experienced chronic back pain since I was 5 years old. I’ve been prescribed a wide array of medications ranging from NSAIDs to benzodiazepines and during especially painful times, fentanyl. There are implications of taking medication daily — from the increased likelihood of stomach bleeds with NSAIDs to the risk of opioid addiction with controlled substances like fentanyl.

Although CBD oil could certainly present its own side effects, they should be weighed against the grave nature of the current pharmaceuticals used to manage pain.

CBD oil might serve as road spikes in an effort to halt the opioid epidemic.
