From one insomniac to another, going to sleep every night can feel like a battle. If you have difficulty falling or staying asleep—and in our increasingly busy world, our numbers are growing—you’ll know that it can affect every waking minute. Because of that, seeking out every new sleep gadget and app can become a 2 a.m. research project. To save you from that spiral, I sought out the new sleep aids to add to your bedtime ritual that promise to help us catch some Zs.
If aromatherapy is your thing, go beyond the pillow mist and layer soporific scents into your whole evening routine. Lush’s new Sleepy bar soap ($8, lush.ca) can be used in your bedtime bath or shower, and its creamy oat-milk lather and long-lasting lavender scent—plus the warm water—will induce restful relaxation.
The free Stop, Breathe & Think app checks in with your emotions, then tailors a meditation practice for you based on how you’re feeling that day, to help your mind stop racing.
Weighted blankets have skyrocketed in popularity of late—they’re designed to give a relaxing, calming feeling for those suffering from insomnia, anxiety and those on the autism spectrum. Now they’re available for your face. The Gravity Thermo-Comfort Weighted Sleep Mask ($53, gravityblankets.com) works by applying around half a kilo of weight (from tiny glass beads) for a sensation of comforting light pressure and completely blocking out light, plus it includes a gel pack that can be heated or cooled for a warming or cooling effect to suit your preferences.
The light bulb
Most people know that blue light from phone screens can keep you awake at night, but light bulbs can have this effect, too. Replace the cool blue-toned light bulbs in your bedroom with warmly coloured ones like Bedtime Bulb ($25, amazon.ca) to naturally create melatonin and induce a calm environment.
CBD, a compound found in the cannabis plant, is said to have anti-anxiety properties and promote relaxation. You can take it as an oil, like Edison CBD Oil ($49, ocs.ca) a capsule, or even chocolate or gummies.
